MUTP-Mumbai Urban Transport Project TRANSFORM-Transportation Study for the Region of Mumbai Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority

APPEAL TO RESIDENTS OF MMR

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken up the mandate to prepare a Comprehensive Transportation Plan for Mumbai Metropolitan Region being the nodal agency for planning, development, co-coordinating and implementing agency established to ensure Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) 's balanced development combined with sustainable growth. MMRDA's focus has been to make MMR as a primary destination of economic activities by promoting infrastructure development and improving the quality of life. In this context, MMRDA has been instrumental in providing various infrastructure facilities in the region.

With regards to the transport infrastructure, MMRDA had launched in November, 2002, an ambitious multi-modal Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) with the World Bank's financial assistance. This project is mainly aimed at improving suburban railway services by optimization of existing suburban services, enhances the capacity by providing additional corridors and by procurement of EMU rakes.

Now, as a part of technical assistance programme under MUTP, the MMRDA in collaboration with World Bank has contemplated to carry out the Comprehensive Transportation Study for MMR with following objectives-

  1. To identify travel pattern of residents of MMR

  2. To prepare mode wise, phase-wise investment programme up to 2016 for all parts of the region

  3. To recommend long term comprehensive transportation strategy for MMR up to 2031.

  4. To enhance institutional capability of concerned organizations

The first and the foremost step in achieving the above objectives is to conduct the detailed household and travel pattern data from the sample households covering 1.5% of MMR's population. It is contemplated to conduct survey of nearly 65,000 households in MMR. The data thus, collected will be analyzed and the current trip pattern and the future travel demand will be estimated. With this background data, it will help MMRDA to prepare a mode-wise/phase-wise investment programme for all parts of the region in the next 2 decades.

MMRDA with the approval of World Bank has appointed consultants for the above study. Since success of the study entirely depends on the quality of the data obtained from household survey, MMRDA appeals to the residents of MMR including Gr. Mumbai to kindly cooperate with the enumerators who will approach to collect the necessary information by giving prior notice. The approximate time for answering questionnaire will be 10-15 minutes. You are requested to kindly extend your cooperation by sparing your valuable time. The valuable information collected through house hold survey will enable to frame appropriate traffic / transportation project to improve the quality of lives of citizens of MMR and provide transport infrastructure for better accessibility and mobility in the region.
